Jim Chapman in the News: State- and Nationwide

As 2016 Chair of NAHB’s 55+ Housing Industry Council, Jim Chapman was recently profiled in the Association’s online magazine, 55+ Housing: Meet the Chair.

In the article, he remarks about the 55+ market that “Homebuilding is still the tortoise in this race, but we’ll be seeing smarter builders and less volatility, for slow, steady growth for the foreseeable future.”

But that doesn’t mean the 55+ market is slowing down. “It’s now growing 4-7% a year – the fastest-growing component of the single-family sector.”

In the June 2016 issue of Georgia Trend, Anna Bentley interviewed Jim extensively for her feature article, Actively Aging, Resort-style amenities, low-maintenance homes and built-in social networks: Meet the revamped retirement community.

She writes: “Jim Chapman, president of Atlanta-area active adult community firm Jim Chapman Communities, estimates that in more than half of the homes in his communities, at least one member of the household still works. He’s also noticed a downward trend in the age of his homeowners, moving from 72 six to eight years ago to 62.”

Jim notes: “There’s this huge group of 60-85-year olds who…really very much want to live on their own, but they don’t want to maintain their yard and they don’t want to maintain their home. They want to buy a house that has maintenance free materials. They want a house that allows them to age in place.”
